Abstract
Background: Glomus tumors (TG), also known as glomangiomas, originate from the glomus bodies (GC) of the dermis, and are usually benign. As clinical signs are not always obvious, diagnostic imaging is very useful in planning treatment, and surgical excision is the procedure of choice, offering a complete cure to patients with TG.
Aim: To report a case of TG on the back of the hand treated in our Hospital. Method: This is a case report of a patient treated at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Service of the Hospital Universitário São Francisco na Providência de Deus – HUSF, located in the city of Bragança Paulista – SP, Brazil.
Case Report: The case in this study involved a male patient, 32 years old, with intense pain in the dorsal region of his right hand when touched for two years. Initial clinical examinations revealed no visible abnormalities, but a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) identified an arthrosynovial cyst between the hamate and the base of the fourth metacarpal. After resection of the cyst, pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of GT.
Conclusion: An accurate differential diagnosis is crucial for the management of GT, as they can be easily confused with other conditions, leading to inappropriate treatments. The use of specific exams, such as ultrasound and MRI, plays a fundamental role in the correct identification of these tumors, allowing an appropriate therapeutic approach, which often involves surgical resection. Therefore, the importance of a judicious clinical approach and the search for accurate diagnoses is emphasized to ensure effective treatment of patients affected by GT.
